...helping to develop loving relationships!

Words can connect or drive you apart...

At times your words...
Are tender and loving
Like snowflakes
gently landing
On skin
The kiss
Of a soft, whispering wind
Caressing
Loving
Peaceful

At times your words...
Are sunlight
Full of warmth and laughter
Sparkling
Joyful
Alive

At times your words...
Cut to the quick
Wound like an arrow
Straight to the heart
Angry
Defensive

Impenetrable
Like a wall
Our hurt
Keeps us apart

When anger enters
Our sacred space
I lose my breath
Am speechless
Overwhelmed
Lost
and confused

I try to speak
From my heart
You cut me off
We drift apart

Underneath the
Hard shell of anger
I see, I feel your pain
And wonder
Can we set aside
Angry words?

Are you willing to let each other
See the hurt part
That's wounded
And sitting sad
Alone in the dark?

Can we connect
From the heart
Instead of drifting
further and further apart?

If we want to feel heard, understood and loved we must be willing to drop our defenses and connect through the heart. The next time you are fighting, or arguing try speaking from your feelings. Drop the blaming, shaming and the put downs. Let your partner see who you truly are, what part of you is hurting and invite them to do the same. See how powerful and healing words can be and how to get to a safe space with each other.
